The World Health Organization holds a briefing on the coronavirus on Monday as the pandemic accelerates in the United States.
According to a CNBC analysis of the Johns Hopkins University data, the US reported an average of 68,767 new cases per day on Sunday. This is the highest ever recorded average of seven days. Covid-19 hospital admissions increased by 5% or more in 34 states on Sunday, according to a CNBC analysis of data collected by the Covid Tracking Project.
On Friday, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that some countries are on a "dangerous path" in flu season.
"Too many countries are seeing exponential increases in cases, which means that hospitals and intensive care units are short or congested and we are not until October," he said. "We are at a critical point in this pandemic, particularly in the northern hemisphere," he added.
