BERLIN (Reuters) – Tesla boss Elon Musk has made it clear how important it is for the company to adhere to the schedule for the construction of its European gigafactory in Brandenburg, said Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach.

Tesla (NASDAQ 🙂 also said it was ready to step up communications on the site near the town of Grünheide and involve local residents more, Steinbach told Reuters after meeting Musk in Germany on Wednesday.

Tesla has postponed the expected opening of its 5.8 billion euro Gigafactory near Berlin to the end of 2021 and blamed the German bureaucratic hurdles for it.

The plant, which will produce both batteries and electric cars, is also facing opposition from local people due to environmental concerns.

The environmental agency in Brandenburg has yet to issue final approval – a further delay cannot be ruled out until 2022.
