From an energy density perspective, the energy density of fossil fuels is still 40 times higher than that of today's best batteries, so in many applications it makes sense economically and in terms of performance (including range) to take advantage of electric propulsion, but with a much smaller battery that can be charged while the vehicle is in operation by a small on-board range extender that burns fuel to power an electrical generator. Essentially, the vehicle carries fuel with a higher energy density than the battery, which is to be converted into electrical energy in the vehicle. In addition, refueling is enabled by the current gasoline / diesel fuel distribution system that is widely used today.
