MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – 21 workers in an ArcelorMittal (NYSE) steel mill in the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas died of COVID-19, the steel workers union said on Saturday.

The dead include employees, contractors and suppliers to the plant, said Carlos Solorio, secretary general of the local branch of the national mining and ironworkers union.

"Everyone worked for the company," Solorio told Reuters. Nine of the deceased are union members, he added.

ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker, was not immediately available to comment on the death report, which was initially released in a video posted on social media by union president Senator Napoleon Gomez.

Solorio said the 21 deaths have occurred since April, and workers were likely to have contracted the virus outside the factory, given the strict hygiene protocols passed by the company. According to the union, the plant employs more than 7,000 people.

ArcelorMittal has announced that it has made substantial donations to fight the virus in Lazaro Cardenas, a major port on the Pacific coast.

With over 385,000 confirmed cases and nearly 43,500 deaths on Saturday, Mexico has the fourth-highest number of coronavirus deaths worldwide. According to official data, Lazaro Cardenas has registered 2,651 cases and 139 deaths so far.
