Which firms provide reductions for college students?

For most college students, trying to save money is a way of life. Whether it's pirating textbooks, dumpster diving, or “borrowing” toilet paper from the library bathroom, students usually find clever ways to pinch a few cents.

But one of the best ways to save money as a student is largely ignored. Students can get discounts in many places where they already shop by simply flashing their student ID or using their student email address. Here are some of the best deals – and how to get them.

Best discounts for students

The following retailers and distributors offer special pricing for students:

The Spotify Premium Student program offers a one-month free trial. After that, students pay $ 4.99 per month for the streaming service from Spotify Premium, Hulu, and Showtime.

The discount is valid for a total of 48 months. Subscribers may be required to provide additional documentation to verify their student status. Unfortunately, you are not eligible for this offer if you have previously used Spotify Premium. You may still be eligible if you already have a Hulu or Showtime account.

Apple offers lower prices for students as part of the Apple Education Program. For example, a 13-inch Macbook Pro costs $ 100 less and a 16-inch Macbook Pro costs $ 200 less.

Apple does not require direct evidence at the time of purchase, but reserves the right to review the purchase afterwards. If you cannot prove that you are a student, you may be charged the difference between the regular price and the student price.

Samsung offers students and teachers up to 30% off tablets, smartphones and laptops. You can also get special prices on other electronics and devices such as headphones, portable chargers, and monitors.

Unlike Apple, Samsung will check student status before receiving the discount. You may need to upload documents to prove that you are a student.

Adobe Creative Cloud

The Adobe Creative Cloud suite includes programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, and Lightroom.

Students can access Adobe Creative Cloud for $ 19.99 per month compared to $ 52.99 per month for regular users. This offer is valid for one year. After that, the price changes to $ 29.99 per month. Use a school email address to have your identity verified immediately upon check-out.

Amazon Prime

While Amazon Prime typically costs $ 119 a year, students can get a free six-month trial. After that, membership costs only $ 6.49 per month, which is half the normal price.

Students can get Showtime for just $ 0.99 per month for one year, a two-month trial subscription to Kindle Unlimited, and discounts on textbooks.

Microsoft Office 365

Students get free access to Microsoft programs like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more when they sign in with their student email address.

Microsoft can ask at any time to review your schooling. If you are no longer a student, you can cancel your membership immediately.

Students can save up to 35% on HP products such as computers, printers and laptops. To access the HP Education Store, you must register with a student email address that ends in “.edu”.

Students can save $ 100 on select computers and up to 10% on monitors and other accessories.

Nike usually offers a 10% discount for students, but recently increased that to 20%. Students must prove their eligibility online before receiving a special voucher code.

The code can only be used once every 30 days.

Local attractions

Many cinemas, museums and other attractions offer special student rates with a student ID.

Cellular provider

Verizon and AT&T offer student discounts on cell phone plans. Students can save $ 10 per month for the unlimited package on one line or $ 25 for two lines.

Students must apply for the AT&T signature program, which determines eligibility based on their email address.

Many local and national chains offer special membership prices for students. Some, like the YMCA, may offer tiered membership based on your income.

Clothing stores

Many clothing stores offer students a discount. Retailers like J.Crew, Madewell, Uniqlo and H&M offer students 15% off.

In general, these discounts can range from 10% to 20% depending on the company. Typically, you will be required to show student ID when shopping in person or using a student email address when shopping online.

Students receive a one-month free trial of YouTube Premium, followed by a $ 6.99 monthly membership, compared to the standard price of $ 11.99. This subscription includes ad-free videos, the ability to download videos for offline viewing, and access to YouTube Music Premium.

Students must check their status every year.

Students who are already keen to save money should shop at Goodwill. Some locations offer an additional 10% discount when you present student ID. In other locations, there may be certain days of the week that students can get an extra discount.

Call your local goodwill and inquire about their specific guidelines.

How to get the student discount

Most in-store retailers require you to show student ID as proof. If you forget the ID at home, the request may be denied.

When you shop online, your student email address is used to check your status. You may not get the discount if you try to use a regular Gmail address.

Other companies go a step further and check your enrollment directly with the school. If you've already graduated, getting a discount may not work even if you still have a student ID or a university email address.

Even if a store's website doesn't have an explicit student discount, it never hurts to ask. You may have an unwritten rule or you may be ready to extend a special offer.

Sometimes the student discount cannot be combined with other sales, offers, or coupons. In this case, it may be better to buy an item for sale than apply the student discount to a full price item.
