New York Governor Andrew Cuomo holds a press conference Monday on the coronavirus as Covid-19 hospital stays and deaths rise in the state.

New York was the fourth state in the US after California, Texas and Florida on Sunday to hit 1 million Covid-19 cases, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Nearly 8,000 people with Covid-19 have been hospitalized in New York, most since early May, according to data from the COVID Tracking Project run by journalists in the Atlantic. The state reports an average of 143 Covid-19 deaths per day, according to a CNBC analysis of the Johns Hopkins data.

Cuomo has warned that post-vacation spikes could occur as more people congregate inside, increasing the spread of the virus.
