The US coronavirus death toll topped a quarter of a million on Wednesday as the recent wave of infections continues to surge across the country.

According to the Johns Hopkins University, 250,029 Americans have died from COVID-19 to date, with nearly 11.5 million cases confirmed. According to Hopkins data, more than 1,000 people were killed a day for eight of the last nine days. While this is the highest average number of deaths in months, it is still below the worst of April, when more than 2,000 people died a day.
