MOSCOW (Reuters) – Moscow has pledged retaliatory measures after the US imposed new sanctions on a Russian ship and two companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
The $ 11 billion project, which will double the existing Nord Stream pipeline across the Baltic Sea and allow Russia to bypass Ukraine on the gas pipeline to Europe, has been a focus of tension between Moscow and Washington.
Washington imposed sanctions on a ship, its owner and a construction company on Friday, but opponents of the project said the measures were insufficient to stop it.
The US and UK on Friday also imposed sanctions on men allegedly Russian intelligence officers responsible for poisoning Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny a year ago.
"We see such hostile actions by the Biden government as dictated by a lack of political will and an unwillingness to build US-Russian relations on a partnership basis," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Sakharova was quoted as saying in the statement.
