Pizza Hut & # 39; s Pizza with Beyond Meat Sausage
Pizza Hut is expanding its US menu to include meat-free sausages from Beyond Meat.
Starting Tuesday, customers of the Yum Brands pizza chain can order the Beyond Italian Sausage Pizza or the Great Beyond Pizza. The main source of protein in Beyond's meatless sausage is peas rather than animals.
The coronavirus pandemic has revived Pizza Hut's lagging U.S. business. Customers who viewed the chain as a dine-in were ordering their pizza for delivery or takeaway, which accelerated Pizza Hut's turnaround efforts. In the third quarter, Pizza Hut's US business saw sales grow 6% in the same store, while its off-premise business saw sales grow 17% in the same store.
Beyond Meat, on the other hand, was hit by the pandemic. Sales in the food service segment decreased by 11% in the third quarter. However, new partnerships could help strengthen this side of the business, which includes sales to restaurants, office buildings, and university campuses. The company announced Monday that it had co-designed a meatless patty for McDonald’s upcoming McPlant line.
Yum Brands and Beyond Meat already have an established partnership. Yum China began selling products from the meat alternative manufacturer in the Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants in the summer. And Pizza Hut restaurants in Puerto Rico and the UK also sell the meatless sausage.
Ethan Brown, CEO of Beyond Meat, said in an interview that Pizza Hut was pushing for a replacement indistinguishable from meat-based sausage.
"We really wanted to build something that was unique in the market," he said. "A lot of people can make a sprinkle with protein these days, but that's special because we took the time to get it right with Pizza Hut."
Pizza Hut previously tested a pizza with a Kellogg meat substitute. The test took place at a single restaurant in Arizona more than a year ago.
"What we learned from this review is that there are a lot of people who really want plant-based meat and that there is a huge appetite for these types of products," said David Graves, Chief Brand Officer of Pizza Hut USA .
Little Caesars, which is privately owned, also tested a meatless sausage pizza. A replacement from Beyond's rival Impossible Foods was used.
Yum's shares, valued at nearly $ 31 billion, are up 1% this year. Beyond's stock, which has a market value of more than $ 9 billion, had more than doubled its value in 2020 at the close of trading on Monday. However, Beyond's shares fell sharply in extended trading. In the pre-market on Tuesday it was down by 22%.
