Metropolis for Sale: This outdated west metropolis in New Zealand might be yours for $ 7.5 million

Wild West enthusiasts and wanderlusters can now own a piece of American frontier history by buying an entire old West City …

The Mellonsfolly Ranch – located on 900 hectares of land in New Zealand's North Island – is for sale for $ 7.5 million and includes 10 themed buildings from the period and a Manuka honey shop.

The tribute city was built in 2006 by the cowboy enthusiast John Bedogni in homage to a border town in Wyoming from the 1860s.

It features an "authentic and licensed salon," a courthouse that doubles as a cinema, a sheriff's office, and a billiard lounge, according to the New Zealand Sotheby & # 39; s International Realty listing. There are also three houses – the main residence plus two rental houses – that can accommodate up to 22 people, it said.

Old West business opportunity

The hotel is approximately six hours' drive from Auckland and is also accessible by helicopter landing pad. It is currently operated as a boutique hotel. Overnight rates start at $ 5,000. But it also offers other possible business opportunities.

Ben Hawan of Sotheby's told CNBC Make It that they had seen requests from parties who understood the "significant potential of the Manuka honey operation".

Local honey has seen a revival in recent years due to its unique taste and perceived health benefits.

According to current owner Rob Bartley, the ranch produced 15.5 tons of Manuka from around 600 beehives in 2019. "There's a lot of money there. Especially when China comes back, they're paying a lot of money for it now," he told Bloomberg.

An easier way of life

The property, which hosts various outdoor activities such as fishing, swimming, and hunting, also offers a haven, according to Hawan.

"New Zealand has been in the spotlight lately because it successfully fought against Covid-19. But before that, New Zealand was a desirable place to live because of the enviable quality of life," he said.

The Mellonsfolly Ranch was designed by its original cowboy enthusiast.

Earlier last month, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that the country had cleared the corona virus. Since then, a handful of newly imported cases of residents returning to the country from overseas have been recorded. A total of 22 people died from the virus in the country.

"New Zealand, down here in the Pacific, is somewhat isolated from the comings and goings of the world as a whole. Because Covid is still widespread in many parts of the world, many buyers see New Zealand as a safe haven," Hawan added.

So far, interest has been aroused by buyers in Hong Kong and a number of U.S. states, as well as domestic buyers.

Residents of Australia and Singapore are allowed to purchase property in New Zealand. Restrictions apply to other overseas buyers. Businessmen who invest NZ $ 10 million over a three-year period may apply a so-called "Investor 1 Residence Visa".
