An effective remote employee is used to working independently without constantly checking in with his boss. Someone who is unable to motivate themselves, place work, meet deadlines, etc. will not thrive as a remote worker. A great remote worker will simply ask about project logistics and appointments before they are ready to work. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to determine whether someone is self-motivated by checking their resume. For this reason, you need to ask questions in an interview to determine what motivates the applicant and request some examples. In this way you get valuable insights and can determine whether they suit you well.
Self-motivated employees have the natural ability to establish a normal routine that enables them to be productive from home without having to constantly check in and receive emails from their superiors. As the owner of the company that hires remote employees, you don't want to worry about whether your employees come to work on time or not. Laziness and delay are traits that are simply not good for remote workers.
2. Technically savvy
If you hire the right remote employees, they can easily navigate through common online portals. You can only be successful as a remote employee if you are technically adept. Although you don't have to be a hacker or know the different coding languages to be a remote worker, you need to be familiar with computers and the latest technology.

This feature is usually fairly easy to find with a remote operator. After all, you will probably first connect to them through an online job exchange. This is not the type of platform where you can find people with poor technical skills. However, it is a great filtering tactic to ask about a technical task in an interview. It can be so easy to ask the applicant to create and send a short introductory video on a platform like Loom.
3. Experienced communicator
Communication can be the most important feature of remote workers. Remote workers who are poor in communication will really struggle to succeed in a remote environment. For this reason, when interviewing potential remote employees, you should look for communication skills. During an interview, it is usually very easy to tell if someone is able to communicate with you by your standards. If you have any doubts, it may be best to use one of the many communication tests.
Competent communication includes being direct, clear, and professional, and asking for help if you are unsure of how to proceed. You do not have to give your employees a personal cell phone number so that they can communicate effectively with you. Typically, an email or online chat portal like Slack is an adequate platform to enable high quality communication. It is important to be clear from the start what you expect from new hires. For example, all emails must be answered within 24 hours and Slack messages received during working hours must be answered within one hour.
Being able to work as a team cannot be easily taught to a remote employee. They either have this ability or they simply don't. As an employer, however, you can create a good working environment. The trick is to make your expectations clear when discussing new projects. However, you don't want to be too strict. Remote workers also enjoy a bit of freedom.

Therefore, try to create a comfortable common ground in which you clarify job expectations and at the same time give your employees the freedom to implement their own ideas and authenticity in their work. The last thing you want to do is assume that your remote team will deliver results without clear guidance. Instead, make sure to outline some guidelines, but leave room for improvement.
