For most people, Labor Day is a time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the company of friends and family. For many entrepreneurs, however, it's just another working day.
While burning the midnight oil is often a necessity to get your startup up and running and moving it on, a little R&R can not only help recharge your batteries but has shown that it can increase your productivity.
An internal study by the auditing firm Ernst & Young from 2006 showed that for every ten hours of vacation an employee was given, the work performance rating was raised by 8 percent at the end of the year. In 2011, travel website Expedia found that 52 percent of employees felt better and more productive after their vacation. Another study conducted by Harvard found that sleep deprivation costs US companies $ 63.2 billion a year due to lost productivity.

So before you make up your mind to skip a friend's barbecue or crush the idea of getting away for the day, there are four reasons why you should take a break from Labor Day.
Reconnect with people
Besides work colleagues, there are more people in your life. However, being an entrepreneur makes it much more difficult to maintain friendships outside of your startup. The busier you are, the easier it becomes to tell yourself that you will call someone later.
Let Labor Day be a time to regain friendships that have marginalized you and an opportunity to surround yourself with loved ones. Just make sure you do it completely apart from work.
Set an example
Labor Day is the best time to get on the train and turn off the phone, turn on the grill, and enjoy a day not tied to the instant access and connectivity that power your startup.
When someone calls you with business problems on their mind, the hint on voicemail may be a direct reminder that it is indeed Labor Day.

As a business owner, you should try to build the Labor Day brand. Encourage other business owners to distance themselves from work and enjoy their surroundings.
Labor Day should be a reminder of what carelessness feels like
Do you remember when you were a kid who rode around your neighborhood on a bike without caring about the world? Let this Labor Day be a time to regain your sense of adventure.
Having fun not only helps you relax, it can also help clear your mind, which can stimulate creativity. Who knows, you might be working with a whole new approach to a problem that bothered you.
You have to press reset
Building your business or brainstorming something new is great, but the only way to recharge after a couple of 12-hour days is to take some time to realign your perspective. Every business owner suffers from tunnel vision after working on a project for a week and you will likely notice a huge drop in your productivity. The only way to fix this is to take some strain off your eyes and go to a quiet, disconnected place. That way, you'll come back refreshed and ready to solve problems.
