Did you know that there are more negative words than positive words in any language? It seems we need a lot of words to describe our negative feelings, but we settle for a handful of positive ones.
For example, researchers have found that most cultures have words for seven basic emotions: joy, fear, anger, sadness, disgust, shame, and guilt.
That is one positive emotion and six negative emotions.
No wonder so many of us have a hard time keeping their negative comments at bay. For the past six months, I've been working on the verbal language I use that I don't even realize is hurting others and, in some cases, making them feel inferior. I even noticed I used a few on my personal and business website. This is a "no-no" that I had to fix.
